Toyota reportedly is developing a successor to the Supra—something we haven’t seen since the FT-HS concept debuted at the Detroit auto show in 2007.
“Toyota” and “fun” are not two words we expect to see in the same sentence these days. That wasn’t always the case, and we offer as evidence two more words: “MR2” and “Supra.” Rumors have it that the latter may be back in the automaker’s lexicon soon, like, next month at the Detroit auto show.
Autoblog reports that Toyota executives have hinted at—a practice very common among auto execs and PR types—a new Supra in the works. Our last glimpse of a potential successor was in 2007 when the company’s FT-HS concept drove onto the scene just as the world economy drove off a cliff. Toyota retreated into its conservative shell, but is now being lured out by the likes of Nissan’s GT-R and Honda’s—well, Acura’s, in this country—upcoming NSX. None other than Akio Toyoda has repeatedly stated that his company needs to shake things up, and a new Supra could do just that.


A powerplant producing more than 400 horsepower would be necessary to do battle with Toyota’s Japanese rivals, and, reflecting the brand’s efforts at Le Mans, augmenting that power with electricity seems more likely than not. It’s been 30 years since the Supra was on our 10Best list, and 15 years since the last Supra rolled off a U.S. dealer lot. If this report is to be believed, it would seem that drought is about to end.

Corvette c7 FIA GT3 racer sports car

The competition arm of Callaway Cars, perhaps most famous for creating outrageous Corvette spin-offs—its Aerowagon conversion kit is our current favorite—has announced that it once again will be producing the FIA GT3 race version of Chevrolet’s sports car. This time, of course, the racing model will be based on the C7 Corvette Stingray that we just tested.
Building GT3 cars requires authorization from the manufacturer in order to submit the homologation forms necessary to race in FIA-sanctioned events. It was announced earlier this week that Chevrolet had backed Callaway to produce its C7 racer.


While this is exciting news—after all, we’re talking about race-ready Corvettes—it’s hardly surprising, as Callaway also held the FIA homologation rights for the successful C6 GT3 car, too. If our first taste of the latest Vette is anything to go by, the decontented, lightweighted, aero’d up, and more powerful C7 GT3 will be truly special.

The sixth iteration of the sought-after Gran Turismo video-game series hits shelves on Friday, and enthusiasts of Formula 1’s reigning champs have a very valid reason to rejoice. Three successors to the fictional Red Bull X2010, which first appeared on GT5 thanks to a tie-up with Red Bull chief technical officer Adrian Newey, will join the ranks of powerful production cars and JDM automobilia on a cadre of the world’s most-interesting racetracks.
The trio of next-generation Red Bull machines—the Red Bull X2014 Fan car (X2014/F), the X2014 Standard car (X2014/S), and the X2014 Junior car (X2014/J)—will have powerful shoes to fill, given the X2010’s theoretical nearly 1500-hp output from a 3.0-liter V-6. No details regarding the X2014s’ horsepower are yet available, but when the sky’s the limit, Wings are a Given, and Newey is once again involved in their design—we don’t anticipate much downsizing. Also unconfirmed: whether brand partner Infiniti’s director of performance had a say.


Avid gamers, as well as those who followed this year’s Los Angeles auto show, are aware that this is hardly the first concept to appear in this evolution of the Gran Turismo series. The Red Bull cars will join the Mercedes-Benz AMG Vision Gran Turismo show car that bowed in L.A. last month, and hints at the future styling of the SLS‘s successor, the GT AMG.

The long, slow march of Ferrari’s Enzo successor from drawings on the pages of designer’s sketchbooks to landing in real-life customers’ garages has been a sadist’s dream. Fans have been given peeks at the car’s engine bayHY-KERS V-12 hybrid powertraincarbon-fiber chassis tub, and spy photos of cobbled-together mules trundling around Europe—but not a single image of the super-est supercar has made its way online (well, save for these blurryshadowy teaser photos). And now to pique your interest just a bit further, FerrariChat‘s forums are alight with chatter over new details that allegedly were revealed at a private preview event for the new sports car. 
Although the new Ferrari remains nameless—internally, it’s been codenamed F150—the car’s other specifics have been finalized, if the info coming out of the private event is to be believed. According to one forum member whose pal attended the event, just 499 F150s will be produced; there will be just three available paint colors, and the car’s seats will be fixed. (This makes sense, given that the carbon-fiber chassis tub Ferrari showed off at last year’s Paris auto show featured two scalloped seat-like indents molded into it.) To fit drivers of different sizes, the pedals will be adjustable, and we assume the steering column would be, as well.


The supercar’s hybrid V-12 powertrain will pack one helluva punch, with the internal-combustion engine producing 800 horsepower and the KERS electric-boost system providing an additional 150 ponies. Combined with a claimed curb weight of just over 2800 pounds, it’s expected the F150 will be good for a three-second 0–62-mph run. The car will supposedly hit 124 mph in seven seconds on its way to a 230-mph top speed. That’s not enough to unseat Bugatti’s Veyron from the fastest production car throne, but we understand it will make the F150 the fastest roadgoing Ferrari to ever lap its Fiorano test track.
Given that private events are being held—presumably to stir interest among potential customers—we’re betting that the Enzo successor could be revealed fairly soon. The Geneva show is coming up, but Ferrari could also decide to debut the car in private, too

Pagani huayra sports car

Supercars often belong in a class of their own. They command admiration and respect from every car enthusiast. One of the cars that deserves this respect is the Pagani Huayra. The Pagani Huayra is powered by a Twin TurboCharged V12 6.0 liter engine from Mercedes AMG.
The result is a maximum output of 720 horsepower at a very low 5800 rpm. This also gives the Huayra the ability to go from zero to 60 mph in only three seconds and reach a top speed of about 230 mph. At the same time, this burst of power is assisted by a seven-speed X-trac sequential transmission.
This transmission helps the engine maintain carbon emissions that are pollution-friendly. It also makes the Huarya 5 compliant with Euro 5 standards. The starting price for this speed devil is $1,273,500

Bugaati veyron super sports car

The fastest road-legal car in the world made its debut in 2010 at the Pebble Beach Concours. This unique offering from Bugatti went into full production towards the end of that year. The Veyron Super Sport obtains its power from a W16 Narrow Angle eight liter engine that gives it the capability to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in 2.4 seconds.
This engine is helped by four bi-turbochargers that have a total displacement of 487.8 cubic inches. Each of the car’s cylinders has four valves to give the fastest vehicle on earth a total of 64 valves. This unique engine combination is the same as fusing a couple of V8 engines to make it a W instead of a V.
This generates a total of 1200 horsepower. That is nearly 200 HP more than last year’s model. It also gives it a top speed of 267 mph. Unfortunately, this speed also comes with a hefty price tag of $2,400,000.
Even though these cars were certified to have a maximum speed of 268 mph, the vehicles that will be shipped to owners will only obtain a speed of 258 mph. This is a measure that is designed to keep the car’s tires from shredding.

Hennessey venom GT sports car

The Hennessy Venom GT is produced by Hennessey Engineering Performance. The second fastest car on Earth is actually manufactured from a modified chassis of the Lotis Exige and is powered by a 6.2 liter V8 twin turbocharged engine from General Motors. This engine is also found in the Chevrolet Corvette ZR1.
The company said that it has been tested recently and can obtain a maximum speed of 260 mph. At the same time, the car itself can go from zero to 60 mph in only 2.5 seconds and from zero to 200 mph in 12.8 seconds. It also has about 1200 horsepower and a price tag of $1 million.

The majority of supercars that are manufactured today come only from the giants in the industry. It is no wonder that the competition to create the fastest breed of cars has become more interesting. British auto manufacturer Ascari produced the A10 to commemorate its 10th anniversary in the industry.
The A10 will let drivers enjoy the performance of a BMW V8 5.0 engine that is heavily modified. This engine has the capability to produce 625 horsepower that is delivered by a standard manual transmission and a six speed manual gearbox. The A10 has the capability to accelerate from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than three seconds.
It also has a top speed of about 220 miles per hour. Aside from that, the Ascari A10 has a torque of about 413 pounds per feet at 5500 rpm and has a maximum rpm of about 7500.

The Noble M600 gained notoriety prior to its release due to the lengthy time it spent on the drawing boards before it was finally built. Even though it has awesome exterior and interior looks that would give other supercars a run for their money, it also excels in terms of performance.
It has a V8 4.4 liter engine and two optional superchargers under the hood. This engine setup gives the M600 three variants of machine strength that range from 450 hp to a maximum of 650 hp. With these variants, the Noble M600 can hit 60 miles per hour in only less than three seconds.
It also gives this supercar a maximum speed of 225 miles per hour. It has a maximum rpm of 6800 and a torque of 604 pounds per feet at 3800 rpm. However, one of the things that may deter an individual from purchasing this car is its lack of brand name recognition. Aside from that, it is not the fastest or most powerful supercar available.
On the other hand, the car’s 650 horsepower can make an individual tingle. It also has an affordable price of $324,680. This makes it a supercar that is perfect for an individual who is looking to own a vehicle that has a certain uniqueness and affordability.

Zenvo ST1 sports car

The Danes are not well known for automotive engineering. However, the Zenvo helped changed some minds in the super car community. The ST1 is powered by a 7.0 liter V8 twin-charged engine that allows the car to reach a maximum speed of about 233 mph and go from zero to 60 miles in only 2.9 seconds.
However, it has a base price of $1,225,000. The main reason for this price is that the car was created in order to give drivers a unique blend of perfection and speed. This 100 percent Danish made supercar is limited to only 15 units.

The Mclaren F1 is more than just a typical fast car. This is a vehicle that has made a constant mark in automotive history. It is powered by a BMW-designed V12 6.0 liter engine that generates 627 horsepower and only weighs about 266 kilograms.

The Koenigsegg CCX is made by the Swedish auto manufacturer Koenigsegg. It has been tested to reach 265 mph even though it is not the manufacturer’s fastest car. The CCX is powered by a 806 horsepower V8 engine that is similar to the modular engines found in Ford models.
However, this engine was thoroughly modified to the point that many car enthusiasts consider it a brand new engine. This is because it features a stronger yet lighter aluminum engine block that is heat treated. It is also equipped with two superchargers that have capability to reach a maximum of 17.5 psi.
The outstanding performance numbers of the CCX cannot be denied. It can go from zero to 100 in only 3.2 seconds and from zero to 200 in only 9.8 seconds. This indicates that the car is a force to be reckoned with. Reaching numbers that only the fastest cars in the world can achieve makes this a creation that is manufactured to obtain extreme speed with a price tag of $545,568

The Saleen S7 is manufactured in the U.S. by Steve Saleen, a specialty car builder. It is certified to reach 248 mph and go from zero to 60 mph in 2.8 seconds. This car is powered by twin turbochargers aside from the already formidable V8 7000cc engine that boosted the horsepower to 750 from a mere 550 in the previous model. However, a number of changes have made it one of the fastest vehicles in the world.
If people look closely, the car has modified front fenders as well as new spoilers and diffusers in order to improve aerodynamics. This ultimately results in a 60 percent increase in the car’s down force along with a 40 percent decrease in drag.
Aside from that, what makes this car unique among its competitors is that it has a mid-engine layout. The S7 has a price tag of $655,000.

Essentially a modified version of the SSC Aero, the Ultimate is powered by a V8 Twin Turbo engine. The displacement has been increased to a maximum of 6.3 liters while the supercharger boost was increased to 14 psi. The outcome was simply unbelievable. It gives the car more than 1100 Newton meters worth of torque and almost 1200 horsepower.
Subsequent modifications such as a new engine block and twin-turbos have allowed the Ultimate Aero’s output to increase even further. Other modifications also result in a 20 percent increase in engine airflow. All of these modifications give this car a maximum speed of 257 MPH, and it can go from zero to 60 in only 2.7 seconds. It also has a price of $654,400.

Prior to 1964, unless you were a die hard sports car aficionado, most Americans had never heard of Aston Martin.  Then the James Bond movie Goldfinger came out, and almost overnight, everyone in the world knew what an Aston Martin was.  The DB5 used in the movie became the most recognizable and talked about car on the planet. For the movie, it came equipped with all manner of spy gadgets including a GPS tracking screen, machine guns, oil slick sprayer, nail spreader and smoke screen, extendable spinner wheel knock-offs, bullet proof shield, and a red button located on the gear shift knob to activate the passenger ejector seat. 

FAST FACTS

1. A 5.9L V12 making 497 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque motivate the Virage. An 8000 rpm redline is near unheard of for an engine this size.
2. All the usual Aston luxuries accoutrements are available, including hand crafted interior and a Bang & Olufsen stereo.
3. The Virage is slotted between the more touring-oriented DB9 and the hardcore DBS.
4. Pricing hasn’t been announced yet, but if you have to ask…
For the times, that DB5 was about as good as it got for powerful British sports cars.  It boasted 282 horsepower from its 6 cylinder motor, and would scoot to 60 miles per hour in 8.6 seconds and reach a top speed of 135 miles per hour.  And while you could buy Fords new top of the line Mustang, (which also appeared in that film as a victim of those extendable spinner knock-offs) for about $3,000, the DB5 would set you back about 13 Grand!
The 2012 Aston Martin Virage Volante, which slots in between their the DB9 and top of the line DBS model, is filled with all manner of amenities and gadgets which even James Bond couldn’t have imagined, including a real pop-up navigation screen, but it lacks the anti-personnel features of the DB5 movie car. Today, all one has to do is depress the accelerator pedal, and unleash the 490 horsepower from its 6-Liter V-12 engine, which scoots from zero to 60 in only 4.6 seconds, and then keep charging up to the top speed of 183 miles per hour, to leave anyone chasing you in the dust.  It’s much simpler and even more fun.

Automotive journalists are not supposed to get hung up on the price of a car, nor the marque, when evaluating it for review. But it is almost impossible not to be taken it by the aura of a car like this.  And let’s face it, that’s part of what the well heeled buyers are looking for when they write a check for nearly a quarter of a million bucks. They want to feel like James Bond every time they enter the car, and want to promote that mystique to everyone else on the road who sees them driving it. 
The Volante is a treat for the eyes with its bold sleek styling that oozes sex appeal. The familiar six sided grill with its five aluminum slats sits low across its nose, just above the trapezoidal lower air intake with flared corners that flow into the upswept creased side sills. The single bi-xenon headlamps, which feature a strip of trendy LED lights follow the lines of the car’s flanks to give a more crisp and modern look from the front. Just behind the front wheel arches surrounding the 10-spoke, 20” graphite wheels, are the iconic Aston Martin side strakes, with 6 LED lights that activate with the turn signals, and flow into the swan wing doors. The car’s rear haunches are accentuated with wide rear wheel wells and the body colored rear diffuser enhances the wide look of the rear deck. Dual chrome exhaust ports peek out from the blacked out rear fascia. This is a special car, and it looks the part.

Slip into the Virage’s cockpit and you are immediately greeted by the smell of seven of the finest Bridge of Weir leather hides that make up the interior, and contrasting double stitching accents the entire cabin. Seventy man hours of bespoke craftsmanship goes into each interior, and it shows in the fine details. The heated seats are supportive and comfortably bolstered to caress the driver’s body. Black lacquer and brushed aluminum serve as contrasting appointments rather than traditional wood trim. All the controls are well laid out and easy to use, and feel right to the touch. The one exception is the round dial “joystick” control for the Garmin Nav System.Trust us; there is no joy in trying to operate that dial.
Cylindrical Bang & Olufsen speakers pop out of the corners of the dash when the radio is turned on and recede when turned off. The headliner for the cloth top feels luxurious and insulates the cabin from noise and cold quite effectively. A simple push button drops the top quickly where it’s hidden beneath a hard cover. While the Virage is technically a 2+2, equipped with rear seats, it would be almost impossible to have anyone other than small children to actually use them. A parcel shelf would be a better use of the space. 

HARDLY A BOULEVARD CRUISER

Insert the elegant crystal key fob into the dash to power up this Aston Martin and the V-12 sings a pleasant song. Mash the gas pedal and it turns into a nasty growl as the ponies and torque push you back into the seat all the way up to the 8000rpm redline. All that power and torque is sent to the rear wheels via a carbon fiber prop shaft and mated to a 6-speed Touchtronic II automatic transmission mounted on the transaxle contributing to perfect 50/50 weight balance.

Aiding driver control, a ‘Sport’ button on the facia allows the driver to select a sharper throttle response and faster gear changes while also holding the gears without automatically shifting up at the rev limiter. With all the power and torque of the engine, there is always plenty of grunt available for quick passes, regardless of what mode you set it for. Of course if you choose to handle all the gear changes yourself, stationery paddle shifters are mounted behind the wheel, and since they don’t move with the steering wheel, it takes a little time to get used to. But all shifts are quick and immediate, and it is fun to flick through the gears yourself. 
The Virage’s dynamics have been tuned to deliver an engaging yet more refined driving experience, where the driver can extract the maximum performance from the car with greater ease. A newly developed Adaptive Damping System (ADS) intelligently ‘reads’ the road to provide optimum road holding, adapting to different conditions. The system now selects up to five different stiffness settings within normal mode, and five stiffer settings within sport mode.
On the road, the Aston Martin Virage Volante handles extremely well. While the car generally feels solid, with the top down it still had more cowl shake and judder than we would have liked or expected in a car of this price. The Virage corners with confidence and despite the 4166 lb. heft of the car there is not much body lean. And knowing that all the electronics are working to keep you out of trouble, the driver can explore the handling capabilities to its fullest, without fear of trashing their large investment. A heavy throttle powering out of a turn will both delight and frighten you until the traction control takes hold and gets everything back into shape before the next turn arises.  This car loves to play on twisties, and it will eat up the miles eagerly.

Of course, with all the power and cornering capabilities, brakes are an important part of the equation.  The Virage comes equipped with Carbon Ceramic Matrix (CCM) brakes as standard; other cars in this price range usually offer ceramic brakes as an option which usually cost more than a compact car. These brakes deliver progressive and tremendous stopping power. Powerful, and resistant to fade and much lighter than conventional cast-iron discs, the CCM braking system means that not only is the overall vehicle weight reduced, but the weight saving at each wheel means that a better balance between ride comfort and handling can be struck. Lower rotational mass also provides improved acceleration.

THE VERDICT


It would be impossible not to like this car. It is a unique and thrilling visceral driving experience because of the power and handling capabilities, but also because of its price and heritage. Each owner will bring his own unique set of mental images and attitude to the driving experience and it will be reflected back to him while driving the Aston Martin Virage Volante. And just as with any car in this price range . . . that is a big part of the ownership satisfaction.
